If I could sum up my professional experience through a movie, then you could just call me the Mary Poppins of Higher Education. Without really knowing it, I would settle upon a job, do what I was meant to do there, and then move on when the wind changed. Or when I decided my boss sucked. Or if my hubby was tired of the cold. There were tons of reasons.
Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
My guess is that you stumbled upon this page because you love your day job but something is calling out to you…a passion area or a need to do more. Like, maybe, a side hustle?
Since you’re here now, I think you have a desire to start the side hustle that will not only complement your day job but work with it.
Tell me, is this you?
While you LOVE what you do at your day job (I mean, you REALLY love it), there’s still an itch that needs to be scratched - am I right?
You want to help people in another way. You want to take those other skills, talents, and gifts of yours and produce something amazing. But working your day job is a busy gig - and you just don’t have the time…
No matter where you are working, what you are doing, and how long you’ve been doing it, you have the capacity to do more and be more. You have the capacity to start and scale the perfect side hustle.
You want to stop apologizing to your friends and family because you are working late…again.
You want to remember those hobbies and passions of yours from…well…” before”.
You’re ready to put in the work and make the change so you can have a thriving small business AND work that day job.
But you have no idea where to start. There’s already so much to do…how can you possibly make the time to making this change?
Let me tell you what I believe you can do…
I believe a day job AND a side hustle is achievable
I believe that you are more than just your job – you’re YOU
I believe in your ability to work hard and keep both passions in balance with each other
And I believe that ice cream can save the world.
Now that we’ve covered the basics – let’s get to work!
Howdy, y’all! My name is Kris McPeak and I am a career professional in higher education who has figured out exactly how to LOVE a day job AND rock a side hustle that is not just fun, but profitable. And I’m also quite proud of the fact that I change my hair a lot.
“Really, kris? How did you do that?”
I am so glad you asked!
I worked successfully and happily in College Housing for more than twenty years (think “dorms”….my first hall director will kill me for saying that). But I came to a point in that career where the late hours and high touch students are parents started sucking the life out of me. I made a claim that I was going to be a housing officer who worked a 40 hour work week and stick to it. When my supervisor said that was unrealistic, I began to question my vocation.
With that career in college housing, I worked nine different jobs at nine different colleges/universities in seven different states. My hubby and I moved approximately every 2 ½ years. I learned a great deal from each position, and I do not regret any of the locations we inhabited…but if I could go back and do it all again, I would do so many things differently.
I chose to interview the employer as much as they were interviewing me. I ensured that my personal values aligned with the values of the college and department. And I structured my priorities in the office to ensure that I had a life outside my job. In other words, not Live to Work, but Work so I can LIVE.
Then the stars aligned and I found and was offered my dream job.
I’m still in higher education. I still work with students. But I go home at 4:30 pm almost every day. No one calls me at 2 am with emergencies. And my work gets done. It gets done well. ALL of my performance appraisals in my current position were marked “Outstanding”.
Oh, yeah, and I’ve worked in my current day job for more than NINE Years! That is a SERIOUS record for me!!
And not only that - I run a non-profit US Masters Swim Team with my hubby (side hustle #1) and have done that since 2016.
My experiences led me to write my first book, “Making ‘Work’ Work for You,” and I self-published it on Amazon. Then I asked myself…
“McPeak, you know there are other people who can benefit from what you’ve been through.”
Sure there are. And before I had a concept in mind for an online business, my husband told a friend of ours that I was a career change expert and I could work with them on resumes and cover letters and interviewing skills.
So here we are.
My first two years as a podcaster and career coach were spent focusing on dream jobs and productivity - but now I want to help YOU - the career professional - create time to develop, build, and scale your Side Hustle so you can create an authority platform for yourself and tap into all those other passions you have - because we both KNOW that you have them.
In addition, my passion for work-life balance and building self-care in one’s Higher Education Career has recently resurfaced for me, and I am making it a personal mission to help other higher ed professionals take their lives back, one hour at a time. You don’t have to work 60-80 hours a week to be a successful educator.
In the next few weeks and months, I’ll be building and offering opportunities to learn more on how to manage your day job and your downtime in order to start and scale your very own Side Hustle. But in the meantime, you can benefit from all kinds of free content that I’ll be offering. So don’t leave yet –
